People create new opportunities and conditions in response to change, these responses are influenced by both gender and age. In Gender, Agency and Change the emphasis is on ''agency'', where agency is taken to be the capacity and willingness of people to act in relation to their social situation. The contributors approach these issues from various perspectives, yet they share a focus on gender. The case studies range in location from Zambia to Poland and explore the ways in which different subjects engage in the reformation of spaces, roles and identities. They redefine the boundaries between and the content of the ''public'' and the ''private''. This volume provides a new sense of how gendered discourses can be deployed to convey new meanings, a new sense of place and time or even to confirm or challenge ideas of ''tradition'' and ''modernity''.
This collection will be of particular interest to students of anthropology and gender studies.
